- 74% Sunni Muslim, 12% Shia and Alawite Muslim, approx 10% Christians

- The Levantine area ( including modern day Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan and Syria) was known as Syria.


-However, with the French and the British occupation of the region modern day Syria was established as a French mandate that gained its independence in 1946.

-  The population of Syria is 22,517,750
